Even though our society is becoming more diverse, the Supreme Court has rolled back the opportunities for children to attend schools that reflect the world in which they live. In two key cases today, it ruled against local efforts to reduce racial isolation in public schools.
Although this is bad for those districts -- and possibly others trying to overcome segregated schools -- we are at least relieved because it could have been worse. A (thin) majority of judges (only five of nine) still believe diversity is important.
We hear there are still some things left that schools can do, but we can't seem the shake the queasy feeling in our stomachs.
